Wind warning issued for Big Island summits, gusts over 100 mph

The National Weather Service has issued Wind Advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet until 6 p.m. Wednesday (Jan 22).

Westerly winds are forecast to incrust to 30-45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. These strong winds are expected to last through most of Wednesday.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect until midnight for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea over 8,000 feet. Winds are forecast to come from the West at 55-85 mph with localized gusts over 110 mph.

The Mauna Kea Access Road is closed to the public above the Visitor Information Station. Winds over 100 mph with gusts to 120 mph along with winter weather conditions are being reported on the summit.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.

A Wind Advisory is also in effect for Hilo, Volcano, Honokaa, Waimea and Waikoloa until midnight tonight. Winds are forecast to come from the Northwest at 20-30 mph with localized gusts over 50 mph. Winds can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult.

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for all Hawaiian waters until 6 a.m. Thursday (Jan 23).
