MEDIA RELEASE

The holiday season of giving came early to West Hawaii as the Lions Club of Kona recently spruced up Higashihara Park and presented a $10,000 check to the West Hawaii Community Health Center for its Weinberg Foundation Grant Service Project.

The Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. grant awarded to the health center will provide access to prescriptions for patients who are low-income and uninsured or under-insured.

On average, the West Hawaii Community Health Center assists about 20 patients in need of medication each month, an on-going initiative started nearly two years ago.

“Our health center is very grateful for the generosity of the Weinberg Foundation through our local Lions Club. This grant will help us continue our efforts to reach out to patients who otherwise would not be able to pay for much needed medicine,” said Richard Taaffe, West Hawaii Community Health Center Director. “This dedicated group works together to answer the needs of our community. For this, we are thankful.”

This Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. grant will further assist West Hawaii Community Health Center to ensure that patients are able to access much-needed medicine to get and remain healthy.

The West Hawaii Community Health Center anticipates the award stretching out over five months, assisting patients with chronic medical needs, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, and asthma.

Chartered in 1934, this Lions Club was the first in history to accept women members. Since then, the club has grown to include more than 31 Melvin Jones Fellows, four district governors and one Past International Director. Lions Club of Kona sponsors the Leo Club of Konawaena High School and performs hearing and vision screening annually at several area elementary schools.

The mission of the West Hawaii Community Health Center is to make quality, comprehensive and integrated health services accessible to all regardless of income.

West Hawaii Community Health Care Center serves Hawaii Island residents with offices in Kailua-Kona, Kealakekua and Waikoloa Village. An Emergency Adult Dental Van is also stationed at Hope Services in Kailua-Kona.
