Loose dogs, electric bills at Waimea town meeting (Oct. 3)

MEDIA RELEASE

Trouble comes in many forms in rural upcountry Waimea – and the 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 Waimea Community Association Town Meeting in Waimea school cafeteria will discuss two very different but troubling issues impacting the community – loose dogs and the high cost of electricity.

First will be a panel discussion on recent incidents involving loose dogs.

Panel members will include a representative of the Hawaii Island Humane Society, Police Department and County Prosecutor’s Office as well as community members who have been victims of bad dog incidents.

The intention of the panel is to educate the public on the laws pertaining to dogs, enforcement procedures and consequences – and whether changes are needed.

Second will be a discussion led by Parker Ranch President and CEO Dutch Kuyper about developing an integrated resource plan to explore how its energy resources may benefit the communities of Waimea, North Kohala and possibly the Island of Hawaii.

Kuyper will present the rationale for adopting a holistic approach for conducting this research and development effort.

Kuyper said “Parker Ranch will be investigating whether electricity rates could be lowered for this area by deploying potential energy resources, given the current and anticipated state of technology and expectations for fuel prices. This initiative could provide guidance for the possible highest and best uses of its energy resources to improve the quality of life and lifestyle of Waimea.”

Several brief announcements will open the meeting including an update on Waimea’s Big Island Giving Tree annual holiday season donation drive to ensure that the children, seniors and working families of this community are all remembered during the holiday season.

This year’s Big Island Giving Tree project will begin officially with the 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5 lighting of the giant Norfolk Pine tree on the front lawn of Parker School. Everyone is invited to the tree lighting that will include entertainment and a simple but delicious light dinner. Donations to the Giving Tree are welcome.

Big Island Giving Tree volunteers collaborate with Waimea Community Association’s 53rd Annual Waimea Christmas Twilight Parade at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and the ingathering of donations has inspired this year’s parade theme of “Lucky 7” – which not only acknowledges the date of the parade but hopefully suggests that donors give seven of something – seven cans of SPAM, seven bottles of shampoo or tubes of toothpaste, seven pairs of socks, even seven bags of rice or seven gift cards from a local store.

Donations for the Giving Tree project will be accepted this year until Dec. 20 to fulfill approved requests for help, which will be taken from Nov. 18 thru Dec. 11.

The entire community is invited to attend WCA Town Meetings and there is no charge for membership, though donations are encouraged to support the organization’s ongoing programs.

As with all WCA Town Meetings, Starbucks will provide fresh hot coffee. To support our local Food Pantry, in addition to cash and checks (receipts always available), WCA accepts donations of KTA Sav-a-Tapes and Foodland Maikai Rewards and any extra produce that may be shared including citrus, greens and avocados. If you cannot make the WCA meeting, please take your donation to the Annunciation Church office during business hours.
