A 25-year-old woman from Hawi died Tuesday (May 7) from injuries she received in a one-vehicle crash on North Kaniku Drive at the entrance of The Fairmont Orchid.

Responding to a 7:57 p.m. call, South Kohala patrol officers determined the driver was operating a 2006 Toyota four-door sedan and traveling west on North Kaniku Drive when she ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a storage building.

The woman was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:48 p.m.

The driver was wearing a seat belt.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
