Gabbard visits Big Isle school

MEDIA RELEASE

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard continued her week of Hawaii meetings with a visit Tuesday to Hawaii Island.

She spent the morning learning about the progress two local “Race to the Top” schools have made, including stops at Keaau Elementary and High School. The elementary school has met its yearly progress benchmark for the 2011-2012 year, and the high school has already improved its math and reading scores.

The Race to the Top program is a competitive four-year grant program designed to encourage and reward states that are creating the conditions for education innovation and reform; achieving significant improvement in student outcomes, including making substantial gains in student achievement, closing achievement gaps, and improving high school graduation rates; and ensuring students are prepared for success in college and careers.

Wednesday afternoon, she will continue her visits to Race to the Top schools on Oahu with stops at Nanakuli High School, Nanakuli Elementary, and Nanaikapono Elementary.
