High surf advisory for West & East facing shores of the Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for West and East facing shores of the Big Island.

The advisory for East facing shores is through 6 p.m. Wednesday (Feb 20), the advisory for West facing shores is from 6 a.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday (Feb 18).

Surf is forecast to be in the eight to 10 foot range along the Kona-Kohala coastline. The surf is expected to build tonight, peak Sunday and lower early Monday morning.

Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.

Boaters should expect recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.

A gale warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday (Feb 20) for the Alenuihaha Channel along with Big Island Leeward and Southeast waters. A small craft advisory is in effect for Big Island Windward waters until 6 p.m. Wednesay.
