Fire destroys structure in Puna, four escape, one woman injured

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Hawaii County Fire/Rescue crews responded to a 3:22 a.m. alarm Wednesday (Feb 13) to Puna for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find a 10’x10′ structure at 12-4321 Kona Street engulfed in flames with the roof collapsed. A 31-year-old woman got second degree burns to her hands getting out of the structure fire, was treated for her burns and transported to Hile Medical Center. Three others, a man, woman and toddler, were able to escape without injury.

The metal shed with wooden subfloor was a total loss with an approximate value of $20,000. Firefighters were able to put out the fire by 3:51 a.m.

The cause of the blaze was determined to be an unattended candle fire that spread to the contents inside the structure.
