Hiking Puu Huluhulu with geologist (Feb. 10)

MEDIA RELEASE

Join the Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (FHVNP) for a “Sunday Walk in the Park” 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 10.

This monthly program on second Sundays is aimed at bringing together the members of FHVNP to share in the park’s beautiful trails.

Led by Cheryl Gansecki this month’s two-hour, three-mile round-trip hike will be to Puu Huluhulu. The trail crosses 1973 and 1974 lava flows, through kipuka, past lava trees, and climbs 150 feet to the summit of Puu Huluhulu. On a clear day you can see Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Puu Oo, and the Pacific Ocean.

This will be a moderate, fairly flat hike over pahoehoe lava at 3,200-foot elevation.

FHVNP’s “Sunday Walk in the Park” is free for Friends members, and non-members are welcome to join the non-profit organization in order to attend.

Annual memberships are $30 for individuals and $45 for families, and come with a variety of benefits.

To register, contact Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes Park at 985-7373 or admin@fhvnp.org. Park entrance fees apply.
