Fire/rescue units responded to a 2:16 p.m. alarm Tuesday (Jan 29) 1/4 mile off the shores of the Outrigger Kanaloa in Keauhou for a paddler who was flipped over by a whale in his one-man outrigger canoe (OC-1).

Arriving on scene rescue crews saw the man 100 yards offshore signaling for help with his paddle. A Captain Zodiac tour boat rescued the 60-year-old paddler, brought him aboard and assisted in bringing his broken 20 foot OC-1 to shore.

The man had a superficial scratch to his arm from the sharp edges of his broken canoe and did not require serious medical treatment.
