Over 13K customers lose power after tree falls on electric lines

Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) has announced that at 11:20 a.m. Friday (Jan 25), approximately 13,494 customers in various parts of the Big Island experienced a power interruption when a tree fell on HELCO’s transmission lines along the Hawaii Belt Road near the 27 mile marker. As a result, HELCO instituted load shedding to protect their equipment. Power was restored within six minutes to approximately 12,200 customers, and all remaining customers were restored by 1:53 p.m.

HELCO apologizes for any disruption this may have caused and sincerely thanks customers for their cooperation and understanding. Mahalo.
