Search ends for missing fisherman at South Point

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Hawaii County Fire Department crews suspended the search for a fisherman who fell into the ocean at South Point Sunday night (Jan 13).

A rescue boat, Chopper One and ground crews reportedly found nothing of the fisherman Thursday (Jan 17). Earlier in the week a Coast Guard plane, cutter and helicopter along with a National Guard helicopter joined the search for the missing man without results.

Witnesses reported that the 67 year-old man fell about 20 feet into the ocean while fishing and was last seen about 50 yards off-shore Sunday night. They lost sight of the fisherman due to darkness.

The area is popular for fishing but has high cliffs and strong currents.
