Fire/rescue units responded to a 5:10 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Jan 16) to Kiholo Bay for a man bitten by a shark.

A 43-year-old man was surfing with a friend at Kiholo Bay when he was bitten on the lower right arm.

Bystanders on the beach were attending to the bitten surfer when medics arrived. The victim was taken by ambulance to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

The beach was closed and shark sighting signs posted after the attack.

  1. That shark has been there forever. Seen it many times. Surfed there New
Years morning and noticed an unusual number of turtles in the water.
Even hit one on a wave. Never saw it in the murky stirred up water. I
was thinking about that shark the entire time out there wondering if it
was around. Closing the beach for a day isn’t going to matter. Its
always there. Even seen it at the entrance to the fishponds years ago. People said it went into them at high tide.

Kiholo Bay and Wainanalii Pond on the North end are supposed to be important feeding and sleeping areas for Honu (Green Sea Turtles) that migrate between French Frigate Shoals and the Big Island. I know sometimes outside Honokohau Harbor if there’s an injured turtle the Tiger Sharks move on in.
