Police charge Martin in shooting of two police officers

Keaka Daniel Martin has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting Wednesday that injured two officers.

Martin, 31, of Hilo, was charged at 4:15 p.m. with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree reckless endangering, place to keep a firearm, possessing a loaded firearm on a highway, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, ownership/possession of a firearm prohibited, and altering the identification markings on a firearm, according to police.

Martin remains in police custody, but is confined to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition from a self inflicted gunshot wound. No bail has been set.

Police officials declined to release the names of the officers, following standard policy to protect victims. Howewver, the officers have widely been identified as Garrett Hatada, 40, and Joshua Gouveia, 31.

Hatada has been with the department for 14 years; Gouveia has four years service.

Both officers remain at Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.
