High surf advisory issued for East facing shores of the Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for South, North and East shores of the Big Island that face towards the East until 6 p.m. Sunday (Jan 6).

Rough and choppy surf is forecast to be six to nine feet in height through the weekend. Beach and oceangoers can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.
