Midst a flood of quirky words including homonyms … and in front of a sea of family members and fellow students, Waimea Middle School’s eighth grade student Anatevka AhLoy became the 2012 school Scripps Spelling Bee Champion on the last day before winter break.

Anatevka’s champion word was “audacious”… preceded by nearly 20 other rounds that included such spelling challenges as “interrogative,” “impediment,” “comportment,” “subsequent,” “manuscript” and “equivalent.”

Taking first runner up was seventh grader Kori Key, who managed to stay neck-and-neck up to just about the final round, successfully spelling “personage,” “archaic,” “fallibility,” “accomplishment,” “planetarium” and “advocate.”

In all, more than two dozen WMS sixth-eighth graders participated in the schoolwide finals to earn the privilege of representing the school in the island’s District Finals from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at HPA’s Gates Performing Arts Center.

Winners of the District Finals will participate in the State Finals, which will be broadcast live March 23 on PBS Hawaii.

“It takes tremendous courage and commitment to participate in this spelling bee including many hours of studying with teachers, fellow students and family members,” WMS Principal Matt Horne said.
“We congratulate all of our student finalists and also thank our Language Arts teacher team for organizing this challenging event!”

WMS schoolwide finalists included:

Eighth Grade: Anatevka AhLoy, Romilly Benedict, Rusty Crabbe, Bodie Glasscock, Iokepa Keliiholokai-Agustin, Kaylene Lincoln and Cherrish Lumalan.

Seventh Grade: Roland Afaga, Jr. (the current No. 2 middle school speller in the state), Jacob Brown, Ryan Hooley, Austin Kahoopii, Korie Key, Kiai Lindsey, Lehua Muranaka Walton, Adrianna Rodriguez, Celeste Souza and Taran Takahashi.

Sixth Grade: Sheldon Aribal, Serenidy Delos Santos, Daneau Domingo, Maya Ellsworth, Kuulei Hashimoto-Ruis, Lilly Lindsey, Tori Lindsey, Keahi Noa-Lange, Lehua Peters-Lindborg and Annie Pham.

Coordinating the bee were WMS language arts teachers Leesa Robertson, Liz Noetzel and Barbara Haight.
