We would like to share the successes, strategies, stories and some of our research with the public. We currently have a draft Sustainable Building Code under review by the Department of Public Works.
The alternative building code has major support inside and outside the County Government. We have researched and prepared zoning code change proposals ready for our new State Legislature.
There are currently more than 450 members of the HSCA promoting sustainable community development on the Big Island. Our focus for the last two years has been the establishment of a Sustainable Habitat Building code and the removal of code and zoning obstructions to sustainable living practices.
Our Sustainable Habitat Building Code Resolution was adopted 7-0 by the County Council in November 2011, and our Sustainable living Research Site Resolution passed the Department of Public Works committee 8-0 and goes to full council on Oct. 17, 2012.
Our national and local political climate has changed; ‘business as usual’ is not an option. There’s a virtual consensus on the belief that socio-economic changes are necessary to sustain the Big Island during more turbulent times.
