DUI stats for the week of August 6-12, 2012

During the week of August 6, 2012, through August 12, 2012, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 846 DUI arrests compared with 878 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 887 major accidents so far this year compared with 836 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.1 percent.

So far this year, there were 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 15 during the same period last year, an increase of 60 percent.

To date, 12 fatalities were related to drugs (5), alcohol (1), or a combination of both (6).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
