The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above elevations of 8,000 feet until 6 p.m. Sunday (June 17). A high wind watch will then be in effect from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon.
A high pressure system North of the islands is causing the strong winds.
Winds are from the East at 35-45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Motorists should use caution while driving on summit roadways as driving in high winds can be dangerous especially for high profile vehicles.
A small craft advisory is in effect for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Leeward and Southeast waters through 6 a.m. Tuesday (June 19).
