Fire/rescue crews and police responded to a 2:06 p.m. alarm Sunday (April 29) to the Hilo Drag Strip for a man hit by a race car.

According to people at the scene a Lotus Elise was heading around the Kart Track in a solo race when the driver lost control, skidded off the track onto wet grass into the officials timing the race along with their tent. Bystanders attended to those hit before a medic unit arrived.

Three to four people were hit by the car. Most of those hit had only superficial bruises but one man suffered a two-inch cut to his head, had neck pain and multiple abrasions over his entire body. An impact mark could be seen on the shattered windshield of the car. The man was transported via ambulance to Hilo Medical Center.

The solo race event is part of the Big Island Sports Car Club of America series at the track where vehicles race around the track one at a time while being timed. Several people said they never had an accident like this before at the races and no spectators were involved as they are kept away from the track area.
