H.S. seniors earn Citizenship Awards

(Special to Hawaii 24/7)

MEDIA RELEASE

Forty-two seniors, one from every public high school in Hawaii, received Citizenship Awards on April 12 in recognition of their service to school and community.

From Hawaii County, 10 very deserving seniors received the award.

The Citizenship Award, which marked its eighth year, is a collaboration between the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, and Department of Education.

A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to a top senior from each school. Recipients are standouts among their classmates, though not necessarily by dint of their scholastic achievements or other traditional yardsticks.

The award honors those young people who have contributed to making Hawaii a better place and who best exemplify the Department of Education’s vision of a model public high school graduate who, among other things, exercises the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

The students, their schools and sponsors are as follows:

* Crystal Leopoldino – Hilo High School – Ken’s House of Pancakes
* Shaye Lynn Baldos – Honokaa High School – Hilton Waikoloa Village

* Aprille Rose Cariaga – Ka‘u High School – UH School of Travel Industry Management

* Brittany Denzer – Kealakehe High School – Marriott Waikoloa Beach

* Andrew Trump – Kohala High School – Mauna Kea Resort

* Ashley Teshima – Konawaena High School – Cyanotech Nutrex Hawaii

* Leslie Rose Pascual – Laupahoehoe High School – Farmers Insurance Hawaii

* Ruby Tidwell – Pahoa High School – Big Island Candies
* Lauren Hill – Waiakea High School – KTA Super Stores

* Anamalia Suesue – Keaau High School – Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association: Hawaii Island Chapter
