Fire/rescue crews responded to a 5:12 p.m. alarm for a single vehicle crash on Highway 11 between the 47 and 48 mile markers Thursday (Feb 23).
Crews found a passenger van crashed with seven Japanese visitors who did not speak English with multiple injuries. Medic units and Chopper Two were used to transport six patients to Ka‘u Hospital and Hilo Medical Center. Four adults were in serious condition, a woman and infant were in critical condition. Bystanders were performing CPR on the infant. Chopper Two landed at both Ka‘u Park and Shipman Park to rendezvous with medic units before flying to Hilo Medical Center.
Highway 11 was closed during the rescue operation. A total of four fire engines, four medic units and one helicopter were involved. The cause of the crash is undetermined.
Japanese are horrible drivers….been to Japan…trust me. Plus they drive on the left side of the road…which adds up to trouble over time. They are also used to driving, for the most part…very tiny cars and certainly NOT American Style Passenger Vans.
You are a terrible person! You should know the fact that they are still in serious and critical condition.
I lived in Japan for over 15 years, California, and currently in Hawaii. Japanese actually go to a driving school and take difficult exams to get a driver’s license. In general, they are good skilled drivers under stricter traffic laws. Also, in Osaka and Tokyo, people are very different and drive differently. It seems to me that Osaka people drive more aggressively. So I don’t know exactly where you visited. You shouldn’t judge them how they are like by what has happened. That’s rude. You don’t know anything.
