High Surf Advisory in effect until Monday (Dec 12)

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

A High Surf Advisory remains in effect for Ka‘u, East Hawaii and Hamakua until 6 p.m. Monday (Dec 12).

Surf along East facing shores are forecast to be six to 10 feet in height consisting of rough and choppy surf that will build through Sunday and dissipate Sunday night and Monday.

Beachgoers should use caution in and near the ocean as rip currents and beach erosion can occur.

The surf is a result of strong trade winds near and upstream of the island.

Mariners are advised to be alert for changing weather conditions as an upper level disturbance will combine with a surface trough will bring isolated thunderstorms and locally strong wind gusts to Hawaiian waters today. The thunderstorms are capable of producing frequent cloud to surface lightning strikes and the heavy downpours can reduce visibility to zero. Locally gusty winds of up to 30 knots with rough seas can be expected.
