By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue responded to a 5:16 p.m. alarm Saturday (July 9) for a report of a boat in distress off Koae Road in Papaikou.

Upon arrival a fishing boat was found aground on the shoreline with nobody on board. The fire department Chopper One performed an aerial search of the surrounding area while rescue divers performed a search of the vessel, surrounding coastline and waters offshore but did not find anyone.

The search for a possible occupant was called off due to darkness and will resume in the morning. The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
