Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:06 p.m. alarm Wednesday (June 22) near the intersection of Kahukai Street and Moku Street in Leilani Estates for a man who fell into a lava tube.

The 63 year-old man had been surveying his property when he fell approximately 40 feet into a three foot wide lava tube. Crews used a rope and pulley system to lower a rescue man into the tube and got the victim out.

The man was transported to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.
