Girls Basketball: Konawaena, KS-Hawaii playing for state titles

Two Big Island teams are into Friday evening’s championship games at the girl’s basketball state tournament on Oahu.

No. 1 seed Konawaena takes on No. 3 Punahou for the Division I title. The two teams have met three times in the championship game (2004, 2007 and 2009) with Konawaena winning in 2007 and 2009.

On Thursday, Konawaena rumbled over Iolani, 60-29, to reach the title game.

In the other semi-final game, Punahou edged Lahainaluna, 52-47. The Maui team defeated Konawaena for the title last year.

In Division II, No. 3 Kamehameha Schools Hawaii faces No. 1 Radford

The Division II game is 5 p.m. and the Division I game tips off at 7 p.m. Both games are at the Blaisdell Center and will be broadcast live on Channel OC16.

In the Division I consolation bracket, Waiakea took out Kaimuki, 52-47 to earn seventh place in the state.

On Friday, HPA squares off against University for fifth place honors.
