UH enrollment reaches all-time high of 56,716

Opening enrollment for the University of Hawaii System for the spring 2011 semester reached an all-time record of 56,716 students, the highest spring enrollment in the university’s history. UH spring enrollment has increased for a fourth straight year, and it has increased by 22.5 percent since 2007.

“The University of Hawaii is committed to increasing educational attainment in the state, and enrollment is the first step. Now our job is to support the success of these students in order to meet the goal of the Hawaii Graduation Initiative to significantly increase the number of college graduates by 2015. Providing quality education to our students will help Hawaii thrive in an increasingly competitive global economy,” said Linda Johnsrud, UH executive vice president for academic affairs/provost.

UH’s preliminary opening credit enrollment figures for spring 2011 increased by 955 students, or 1.7 percent, compared to spring 2010, and by 5,764 students, or 11.3 percent, compared to spring 2009.

Hawaii Community College posted the largest numerical gain of any UH campus with 301 more students than last year, while UH West Oahu boasts the largest percentage growth in enrollment at 9.8 percent.

Spring enrollments increased at seven of the 10 UH campuses ranging from 1.1 to 9.8 percent, while UH Manoa, Honolulu and Kauai Community Colleges posted slight decreases.

UH Hilo’s opening spring enrollment increased to 3,961 students, a 2.5 percent gain (97 students) over last spring, while UH West

Oahu’s enrollment is at 1,403 students, an increase of 9.8 percent (125 students) from the previous year.

UH Manoa posted a slight decrease of .2 percent, or 44 students, from a comparable date in spring 2010 for a total enrollment of 19,242 students.

Enrollment at the UH Community Colleges rose to 32,110, an increase of 777 students, or 2.5 percent above spring 2010.

Specific figures for the community college campuses are:

* Hawaii Community College stands at 3,553 students, an increase of 9.3 percent or 301 students
* Honolulu Community College has 4,333 students, a 3.6 percent decrease or 161 students
* Kapi‘loan Community College enrolled 8,878 students, a gain of 96 or 1.1 percent
* Kaua‘i Community College registered 1,330 students, a slight decrease of 1.2 percent or 16 students
* Leeward Community College has 7,263 students enrolled, an increase of 187 students or 2.6 percent
* UH Maui College registered 4,290 students, a gain of 212 or 5.2 percent
* Windward Community College recorded 2,463 students, a gain of 158 or 6.9 percent

Separately, more than 20,000 registrations in non-credit programs are expected throughout the UH system.
