Ultraman 2010: Colting, Biscay leading after Day 1

Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7 Editor

Two-time champ Jonas Colting, of Sweden, jumped into the Ultraman lead Friday after a 6.2-mile ocean swim and 90-mile bike leg that finished in Volcano.

Colting managed to open a 10-minute gap over Australian Mike LeRoux, who has another 10-minute lead over Californian Slater Fletcher.

In her inaugural run at Ultraman Hawaii, Hillary Biscay leads Amber Monforte by 4:35 and defending champion Shanna Armstrong by more than 15 minutes.

Biscay, of Arizona, has finished eight Ironman distance races this year and 40 overall, obliterated the women swim record by 26 minutes, clocking in at 2:20:48. She capped the day with a 5:56:21 bike leg.

Defending six-time Ultraman Hawaii champion Shanna Armstrong recorded a personal best 2:40:16 swim and a 5:52:16 bike to finish in 8:32:32 — still in striking range.

The Ultraman World Championships is a three-day stage triathlon totaling 320 miles that circles the Big Island.

Friday’s Day 1 consisted of a 6.2-mile swim from Kailua Pier to Keauhou Beach, followed by a 90-mile bike from Keauhou to Volcano.

Saturday’s Day 2 included a 171-mile bike from Volcanoes National Monument through Hilo and north to Hawi town.

Sunday’s Day 3 is a 52.4 mile run from Hawi south along the Queen Kaahumanu Highway to the Old Kona Airport Park. The winner should be crossing the finish line sometime after noon.
