County provides temporary rubbish disposal site in Ocean View

MEDIA RELEASE

The county Department of Environmental Management has placed a temporary rubbish bin in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates for use by residents of the Ka`u District community.

The rubbish bin has been placed at Kahuku Park at the lower level o Paradise Circle Makai, and it will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning Nov. 20. An attendant will be on duty during operating hours.

Only plastic-bagged, household-generated rubbish will be accepted. Commercial rubbish, metals or white goods (washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc.) will not be accepted at the Kahuku site. Materials for recycling should be taken to the Waiohinu or Waiea transfer stations.

The Kahuku Park site lower level has been prepared with gravel and a concrete pad for the rubbish bin. An exemption from requirements for construction of a transfer station from the state Department of Health, necessary before starting the temporary service, was received by the County on Friday, Nov.12.

The Kahuku Park site is a temporary location until a permanent transfer station is built in Ocean View. Negotiations for the purchase of land for the permanent transfer station are ongoing.

“The large, growing Ocean View community has a tremendous need for this service until the permanent transfer station is in place,” said Mayor Billy Kenoi. “Mahalo to the Department of Environmental Management for its effort to provide this new temporary facility, which will help prevent litter and illegal dumping on our island and encourage everyone to care more for our environment.”
