On the face of it, hosting the Kamehameha Warriors might seem like a huge obstacle for the young Lady Cardinals and one of those games that just have to be gotten through for the fans of both teams Monday (Oct 11). But thanks to some inspired playing by the Cardinals and a Warrior coaching staff that wasn’t afraid of dropping a set or two, the game was exciting from start to finish.

Giving their younger players a chance on the floor, Kamehameha started an underclassmen-only lineup in the first set. The Cardinals kept the score close and the Warriors eventually took the set 25-21. In the second set, the Warriors seniors had their turn, but the Cardinals were not going to go down without a fight. They took the lead a few times and finally gave up the set 25-23. In the third set, the Warriors returned to their underclassmen lineup, and this set was a battle.

The crowd was treated to some terrific rallies, and fans forgot which team they had come in support of, cheering like crazy as each team managed to keep that ball off the ground again and again. The rafters shook with the whoops and hollers when the Cardinals pulled out the win 25-23. The fourth set was less intense than the third but was still lively enough to keep the crowd enthusiasm going. The Warriors wrapped up the game, taking the set 25-17, but no one seemed to care, with smiles and hugs all around.

Both teams have their Senior Nights Tuesday (Oct 12), the St. Joseph Cardinals host the Waiakea Warriors and the Kamehameha Warriors host the Keaau Cougars.
