Online petition supports JAL’s Kona flight

Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7 Contributing Editor

Following the announcement that Japan Airlines isconsidering dropping its Kona flight route, a delegation of island visitor industry leaders visited Japan last week.

The delegation is expected to make a statement sometime next week about the visit.

In addition to urging the airline to reconsider axing the 15-year-old route, Hawaii Tourism Authority has started an online campaign.

The following is the full text of the petition drive:

During these challenging economic times, we are again facing the risk of losing one of Hawaii’s major direct airlift routes. Japan Airlines (JAL) executives are considering canceling the direct flight from Narita to Kona, which will not only impact Hawaii Island’s economy, but also our overall community.

For more than 15 years, JAL has provided a daily, direct flight from Narita to Kona International Airport, which is the second international point of entry into the state of Hawaii. This route has served as a critical lifeline to Hawaii, which has helped to cultivate our strong ties with Japan and its people. Additionally, our partnership with JAL has produced countless jobs for our residents, provided benefits to our community, and has been a strong backbone to our visitor industry.

Please join us in urging JAL officials to reassess their impending decision. You can help by signing our petition or writing a letter of support:

Aloha to our friends at Japan Airlines:

As a resident of Hawaii, I would like to say thank you for Japan Airlines (JAL) continued commitment and support of our state. JAL is an important part of Hawaii’s visitor industry and we value the relationships we have developed over the years.

Since 1996, JAL has provided a daily, direct flight from Narita to Kona International Airport. This flight is important to Hawaii’s tourism economy, the economic well-being of Hawaii Island and our entire community. While we understand the difficult task of evaluating all of JAL’s routes, we humbly urge you to continue service from Narita to Kona.

Our hope is that the preservation of the Narita to Kona flight will help to benefit JAL and Hawaii well into the future while maintaining our cultural bond between Japan and Hawaii. JAL will always be considered a friend of Hawaii, and we thank you for your continued support and many years of service to our islands.
