Public Libraries will celebrate National Library Week in April

Libraries are the heart of their communities. National Library Week 2010 (April 11-17) is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries and librarians, and discover how “Communities thrive @ your library,” this year’s theme chosen by the American Library Association. Public libraries statewide will host free programs throughout the month in celebration. Hawaii’s public libraries will offer an array of culturally-enriching programs featuring storytellers and performing artists recommended for ages 5 and older unless otherwise noted:

  • Bailey Matsuda, “Rhythm in Music,” Saturday, April 3, noon at Hawaii State Library. Matsuda is founder and director of Cabaseke, a dynamic musical ensemble. He will showcase a variety of percussive type instruments and their role in influencing various types of western music in this participatory program.
  • Storyteller Nyla Fujii-Babb, “Very Beary Tales and Tunes.” Fujii-Babb, one of Hawaii’s premier storytellers, will share favorite literary “bear” stories and songs at four selected Oahu and Maui libraries; for all ages: April 6, 10:30 a.m. at Aiea Public Library; April 8, 10 a.m. at Makawao Public Library; April 16, 10:30 a.m. at Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library; and April 22, 10 a.m. at Kahuku Public and School Library.
  • Storyteller Brenda Freitas-Obregon, “A-B-C Zoo: An Alphabet of Animal Tales,” April 8, 10:30 a.m. at Hawaii Kai Public Library. Freitas-Obregon, Children’s Librarian of Kalihi-Palama Public Library, will present a lively, participatory storytelling experience for preschool through early elementary school children who may sing, learn simple sign language and dance.
  • John Keawe, “A Tribute to Slack Key.” Keawe, a self-taught slack-key guitarist, is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music awards recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii’s first Grammy winner, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (2005). Keawe will offer a tribute to the slack key style and various artists at five selected Big Island, Oahu, and Molokai libraries; for all ages: April 10, 3 p.m. at Kailua Public Library; April 13, 3 p.m. at Molokai Public Library; April 15, 6 p.m. at Honokaa Public Library; April 24, 1 p.m. at Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library; and April 27, 6:30 p.m. at Kahuku Public and School Library.
  • Storyteller Dave Del Rocco, “Stories from Around the World.” Del Rocco, a former HSPLS librarian, is a Hawaiian Culture teacher and Hawaii reference librarian at Punahou School. Del Rocco will share folktales from Hawaii and other places such as Africa, Alaska, Italy, Laos, and the Philippines at four selected Oahu libraries: April 11, 2:30 p.m. at Kaneohe Public Library; April 13, 6:30 p.m. at Kahuku Public and School Library; April 17, 10 a.m. at Kailua Public Library; and April 24, 10:30 a.m. at Mililani Public Library.
  • Barbara Chung Ho will present interactive workshops at selected Big Island, Kauai, and Oahu libraries: “Folk Art of Chinese Knotting” – April 12: 10 a.m. at Naalehu Public Library, 6:30 p.m. at Bond Memorial Public Library; April 15, 10 a.m. at Lihue Public Library; April 28, 6:30 p.m. at Waimanalo Public and School Library; and “Folk Art of Chinese Papercutting” – April 17, 1 p.m. at Liliha Public Library, and April 18, 1 p.m. at Kaimuki Public Library. Both workshops will include a brief history of the Chinese art forms and are suitable for ages 10 and older. Registration is recommended; call the hosting library.
  • Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble, “The Art of Taiko.” Endo, a composer, leader, and performer of contemporary taiko (Japanese drums) will introduce the various drums and percussion instruments of Japan that are used in traditional and contemporary music at five selected Big Island and Maui libraries: April 13, 1:30 p.m. at Hana Public and School Library; April 15, 3 p.m. at Wailuku Public Library; April 17: 9:30 a.m. at Hilo Public Library, 2 p.m. at Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library ; and April 20, 5:30 p.m. at Kailua-Kona Public Library.
  • Wayne Mendoza, “Folk Dances of the Philippines.” Mendoza, an instructor of Philippine Dance at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will present a demonstration and cultural tour of the Philippines and their dances: April 17, 1 p.m. at Kailua-Kona Public Library; April 24, 10:30 a.m. at Kapolei Public Library.

The Friends of the Library of Hawaii, Marriott Resorts Hawaii, Ko Olina Resort & Marina, HMS Host, Meadow Gold Dairies, National Endowment for the Arts, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the University of Hawaii-Manoa Outreach College, Statewide Cultural Extension Program, are sponsoring the National Library Week 2010 programs. Program schedules are subject to change. Contact the hosting library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

In addition, other public libraries will host programs featuring noted local storytellers, performing artists, crafters, author talks, and informational speakers.
