Hospital helps seniors with driving skills

(Special to Hawaii 24/7)

MEDIA RELEASE

Kona Community Hospital (KCH) hosted the first Annual CarFit event for senior drivers Saturday, March 20. CarFit is a national program designed to give senior drivers a quick 12-point check-up, by trained occupational therapists, on car adjustments and positioning for safe driving. The free community program drew in twenty participants.

Sponsored by AARP, AAA, AOTA (American Occupational Therapy Association), the data collected from the event goes into the national AARP database.

Although the event was rescheduled due to the tsunami warning that affected the Hawaiian Islands on February 27, it was a great success, with many drivers able to participate and learn about how to adjust their cars and about community resources.

KCH occupational therapists Minh Phung, Shakti Brickland, and Marieta van der Watt joined Occupational Therapists from the community for the event. AARP and occupational therapists from Hilo were present to be trained for their CarFit event scheduled for May 15.

For more information on CarFit, visit www.car-fit.org or contact the local AARP, AAA, or the occupational Therapy department at KCH at 322-4455.

April is also National Occupational Therapy Month, which recognizes the services and accomplishments of occupational therapy practitioners and to promote awareness of the benefits of occupational therapy.
