Kona brush fire update for Monday (Jan. 4)

The following are status reports from county officials for the three fires in South Kona as of  Tuesday morning:

Yee Hop Ranch (Honomalino) – Fire is out.

Hokukano Ranch (5,000 foot elevation above Konawaena High School ) – Fire is still burning within the bulldozed perimeter.  Fire Department and ranch hands are on site. This is mostly a grass, brush, and some tree fire.  Fire crews are trying to create more fire breaks inside of the perimeter to stop more acreage from burning.  More than 1,700 acres are now lost. Currently, no end in sight.

Kealakekua Heritage Ranch (4,400 foot elevation above the Kealakekua Ranch Shopping Center ) – Fire is still burning.  This is a forest fire in a forest of 50-60 foot tall trees in thick groves. While the fire is contained within the perimeter fire breaks, those breaks need to be widened and fire crews are working on widening them to prevent falling trees from breaching the fire breaks.  Between 250-300 acres have burned to date.  Currently, no end in sight.
