Home destroyed by fire in Pahoa Saturday

Fire/rescue units responded to a 2:03 p.m. alarm Saturday (Jan 30) for a structure fire at 13-617 Hinalo Street in Pahoa.

Upon arrival crews found a single-story, one bedroom home engulfed in flames. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 2:30 p.m.

The 900 square foot single family residence was reported to be a total loss with a value of $94,952. There were no injuries reported and no roads blocked. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Rechargeable batteries used with touch panels for audio/visual systems recalled by AMX due to fire and burn hazards

A defect in the battery can cause the battery pack to overheat and rupture. This poses a fire and burn hazard to consumers. This recall involves AMX 5000 series (MVP-5100, MVP-5150, MVP-5200i) wireless touch panels. The model number can be found on a label on the back of the unit. These touch panels can be used as remote controls for residential or commercial audio/visual systems.

County mopping up remains of Kealakekua fire

Firefighters are mopping up the Kealakekua fire as hazards and risks have been greatly reduced, Chief Darryl Oliveira reported today. Demobilization of Hawai‘i County firefighting crews on the scene is under way.

Secure fire breaks have been established and only a few smoldering hot spots remain. The hot spots are more than a quarter-mile inside the fire breaks and do not pose a threat at this time.

Police charge Kailua-Kona man in drug bust

A Kailua-Kona man was charged on Friday (January 29) with various drug offenses.

Officers from the Area II Vice Section served a search warrant on Thursday (January 28) at a Kanaka Street residence in Kailua-Kona. A 24-year-old man was arrested after officers recovered 23 grams of powdered cocaine, 7.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 9 grams of hashish, 7 grams of dried marijuana and 24 marijuana plants from the residence.
