Frankenstein’s Follies – Oct. 30-31

Frankenstein’s Follies will be presented at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity (77-165 Lako Street; at the bottom of Lako Street) in Kailua-Kona. Performances are:

Friday, Oct. 30, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 31, 2 p.m.

The play is performed by children and young adults from 8 to 18 years old. It features a monster, his bride and his friends Dracula and Vampira. As they journey, they encounter ghouls, witches, skeletons and a teenage werewolf while singing “I Feel Pretty,” “Sunrise Sunset,” “Tomorrow” and more. Robb Dahlke is director, and Francine Alexander is musical director.

Purchase tickets at Pacific Gold Jewelry, next to Island Lava Java in Kailua. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for children.

Kailua-Kona’s First-Ever Two-Part Halloween Party – 5 p.m.

HAWAII-KINE HALLOWEEN, sponsored by Keauhou Shopping Center to benefit Hawaii Island United Way, which supports 41 Big Island charitable agencies. Part one of the party is a fun reception in Heritage Court. A $40 ticket gets you free pupu, a costume contest,live music and a cash bar from 5-7pm. Part two of the party moves to a big tent for a delicious buffet dinner, more costume contests, wine at the tables, a silent auction and dancing to the tunes of “Old School.” Charge tickets by phone by calling Hawaii Island United Way at 935-6393 or purchase them for cash by visiting the KTA Super Store in Keauhou or Kailua Kona, Bank of Hawaii branches in Kailua-Kona, Kealakekua and inside KTA at Keauhou or American Savings branches in Kealakekua, Kailua-Kona and inside the Lanihau Sack N’Save. “Phantasmagoria”, A “Spooktacular” Community Event – 7:30-10 p.m.

West Hawaii Dance Theatre, Chamber Orchestra of Kona, Konawaena High School and Kealakehe High School will present “Phantasmagoria”, A “Spooktacular” Community Event at Konawaena High School.

The First Act includes West Hawaii Dance Academy’s Performance Group performing to the Chamber Orchestra of Kona’s renditions of Ponchiell’s “Dance Of The Hours”, and Brahms’ Hungarian Dance #5. The Academy’s youngest aspiring dancers will perform to Saint Saens’ “Carnival Of The Animals” choreographed by Midori Satoh. A “Mini-Ballet to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” choreographed by West Hawaii Dance Academy’s Artistic Director Virginia Holte will feature Guest Performer Hiroki Ichinose from the Maui Academy of Performing Arts as “The Phantom.” In addition, The Chamber Orchestra of Kona, under the baton of Conductor Lisa Archuletta and Guest Conductor Scott Weiss, will play Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain” & Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings, with Julie Taylor, soprano.

The Second Act will include 55 Konawaena High School Social Dance and Peer Education Students in “THIS IS HALLOWEEN.”

The entire performance will conclude with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

The piece will include over 30 dancers from Konawaena High School, Kealakehe High School, and West Hawaii Dance Academy.

Proceeds for this event will be used for ongoing programs for WHDT, COOK, & Konawaena High School Peer Education, Dance, and Music.

Tickets for the performance are $5 and may be purchased in advanceby contacting West Hawaii Dance Theatre at 329-8876 or at the door the day of the performance. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.

Annual Hawaii Island Humane Society Halloween Pet Walk – 8 a.m.

Join us for our annual HIHS Halloween Pet Walk. Animals and their owners will walk from Hale Halewai to Kailua Pier and back. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Walk begins at 9 a.m. Cost is $30 per family in advance or $35 on day of event. Pledge/Registration forms available at any HIHS Shelter (Kona, Waimea or Keaau) or from area veterinarians.

PRIZES for the top three walkers raising the most pledge money! Plus Best Costume, Best Pet Trick, Hot Dog Eathing Contest, Best Canine Kisser and more! $50 in pledges gets you a free T-shirt.

ZOOBOO! – 10:30 a.m.

Panaewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens in Hilo Hawaii will celebrate Halloween with a ZOOBOO!

The ZOOBOO! is 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and will feature a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt, pumpkin bowling, kid- friendly Halloween stories, ”spooktacular” face painting, a costume parade and contest, a “ghoulish” grinds food booth and other frightfully fun crafts and games!

Stop by the petting zoo 1:30-2:30 p.m. Stick around until 3:30 p.m. for Tiger Feeding and visit with Namaste, the white Bengal Tiger.

Prizes in the costume contest will be awarded to the funniest, most colorful, most adorable, “greenest” (using recycled materials) and most zoo-related costume in the following age groups: ages 0-5 and ages 6-12. The costume contest will begin at 11 a.m. in the grassed area above the main pavilion.

Kailua-Kona Block Party – 2 p.m.-midnight

Vendors, three stages, hair show, costume contest. Benefit for the Hawaii Island Food Bank. Alii Drive will be closed 2 p.m.-midnight from Kailua Pier to Hualalai Road.

Trick Or Treat Through Old Pahoa Town – 5-7 p.m.

To commemorate Pahoa’s centennial year, Mainstreet Pahoa Association and area businesses present “Trick Or Treat Through Old Pahoa Town,” a fun and safe event for keiki of Puna and elsewhere. 5 p.m. — 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31. All ages welcome. Candy and other treats provided to keiki only. Motorists should be on the lookout for keiki and proceed with caution down Pahoa Village Road.

Sea View Circle Haunted House – 5:30 p.m.

Once again the Haunted House at the bottom of Sea View Circle will be open from dark until about 9 p.m. We are once again asking for a non-perishable food item as a donation for the Food Basket of West Hawaii. Donations are not required….it is just a nice thing to do.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with this year’s Haunted House.

The Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii in Hilo invites guests to a Halloween Party under the stars.   Guests can arrive in festive costumes to take a spooky tour through Imiloa’s version of a ‘haunted house’ Exhibit Hall, and other special activities such as ‘alien autopsy,’ ‘pit of science’ and ‘brains in space.’ Enjoy this evening of sweet surprises, a great alternative to navigating the tricky (sometimes rainy) streets of Hilo on Halloween.  Each participant who completes a ‘spooky hall pass’ receives a treat bag. Admission is $5 for all participants, adults and children. No fee for infants under 2 years old.

Halloween Double Feature at the Palace Theater – 7 p.m.

FRANKENSTEIN (NR) Starring: Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles Directed by James Whale Made in 1931 and still unnerving to this day, Frankenstein adroitly explores the fine line between genius and madness, and features Boris Karloff’s legendary, frightening performance as the monster.

  2. Thought I must be looking at an old website when I saw that the zoo activities include tiger feeding. Did the zoo get a new tiger? Namaste passed away some time ago…
