Solid waste transfer station hours to change

MEDIA RELEASE

The Department of Environmental Management intends to implement a change to the operating hours and days at County of Hawai`i Solid Waste Transfer Stations (also known as convenience centers or transfer stations) beginning December 1, 2009. This change will also apply to the operating hours and days for associated onsite Recycling Centers, Reuse Centers and HI-5 Redemption Centers.

The change is part of the Department’s plan to increase oversight, reduce operating costs and further the County’s progress toward Zero Waste by improving facility operations and expanding services at all County Solid Waste management facilities. Transfer station hours have been adjusted according to identified patterns of use. Not all transfer stations are used frequently enough to justify the costs associated with keeping them open every day. For these stations, the Department is considering two (2) schedules of alternating days that, in some cases, will allow for a station to be open when an adjacent station is closed thereby minimizing customer inconvenience.

    of course the law makers of Hilo have their transfer station open longer than the rest- whats new?

    like most services on the Big Island, the environmental waste managements and its cohorts are run by people who are corrupt, stupid, and often arrogant, and who could not manage to feed a dog much less run a waste dump. We do not want attemdents taking trash out of our cars, we want more opening hours. Things worked fine before without the attendents. Is that what one does in a financial crisis- hire more useless workers who are related to one? This is a public safety issue. Trah which cannot be speedily disposed of causes hazards like disease and flies, etc. and this is a public disrace. Fire the extra workers and get back to leaving the dumps open every day;
