UH-Hilo defeats Alaska 3-2 in title game of Nanook Classic

FAIRBANKS, AK – In session three of the Auto Service Nanook Classic, Hawaii-Hilo bested the Alaska Nanooks to claim the classic title by the score of 3-2 in a thrilling match. In the earlier game, Rockhurst cruised by Urbana 3-0 to secure their first win of the tournament.

In the early game Rockhurst used only three games to win their first game of the classic by the scores of 25-15, 25-10, and 25-10. Rockhurst hit .438 as a team and had ten serive aces.

Leading the way for Rockhurst was Maggie McGovern with 16 kills and a .464 hitting percentage. Emily Levy also had eight kills for Rockhurst and had a .615 hitting percent for the game. Andrea Schroeder led the team with eight blocks and Alyssa Emerson had 37 assists in the win.

Urbana was led by Paula Lindsay with ten kills and accounted for 11 of the Blue Knights 26 points. Karla Vogel had 12 assists and Amy Hickman led the team with five digs.

The nightcap saw the Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo grab an early 2-0 lead by out scoring the Nanooks 25-20 in the first game, and 25-18 in the second game. The Nanooks would storm back and win games three and four by the scores of 25-23 and 25-20 before dropping the fifth set 15-9.

The Nanooks were paced by three players who reached double figures in kills led by Megan Thigpen with 15. Heather Lyons (14) and Jessica Hill (10) also had double digit kills while Lyons also had nine digs. Freshman Allison Oddy had a team high 15 kills for the Nanooks and senior setter Alexa Sherman had 40 assists in the losing cause.

Despite the tough loss head coach Phil Shoemaker saw a lot of heart out of his team. “It took a lot of heart to come back like that. There was a lot to be proud of in that effort” he said.

For Hawaii-Hilo, Josimara Pinheiro had a team high 19 kills and 16 digs to lead the Vulcans. Morgam Booney and Fabiane Seben each had 13 kills and Kawena Cubi-Otineru had 11 kills. Katie Swenson had another strong game with 52 assists after having 62 in the earlier game on Saturday.

The Nanooks will return to action when they travel to Hawaii to play Chaminade, Hawaii-Pacific, Hawaii-Hilo, and BYU Hawaii from September 10-12.
