5.0 magnitude earthquake rocks Big Island

Photo sequence by Baron Sekiya/Hawaii247.com

I shot the above sequence of photos during the actual earthquake. I happen to see a truck with an uncovered load two lanes away while at a stop light near Hilo International Airport and decided to shoot a photo of it. As I shot the photo my car started shaking and I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t hold the shot steady and thought a gust of wind had hit the car suddenly. It was only a minute later I figured-out it was an earthquake. The sequence is very short as I held the shutter button down and it’s looped on part of the video to make it longer. Enjoy, Baron.

Around Honalii, it was shocking enough to think about getting renter’s insurance again, & more importantly a Pelican case for my photography equipment. Oh, and basement walls creaked as if there were two-three pulses (lighter followed by slightly stronger) with surrounding waves.

I was at a stoplight near the Hilo airport when the quake struck. It shook my car, calmed down a little then shook it good again. I thought it was someone shaking my car or the wind, but there was no wind. It appears there was an aftershock this afternoon. http://tux.wr.usgs.gov/Quakes/hv00033615.html

In Holualoa it was the typical shaking. I could tell it was far away and not in Kona. No sharp jolt. Hopefully it’s lava moving near chain of craters rd and a new eruption will start and end the Waikupanaha event.
