Online voting for annual Hawaii Music Awards open

The Hawaii Music Awards is an annual contest held at the beginning of the year that recognizes artists and musicians living in Hawaii, Hawaiian and Polynesian musicians living anywhere in the world, and international artists who perform Hawaiian or Polynesian-style music.

The people’s choice competition includes categories in a myriad genres, including Hawaiian, slack key, blues, folk, country, rock and jazz.

Big Island musicians on this year’s roster of nominees include John Keawe and Kohala. (We almost certainly missed mentioning some Big Island nominees, so give ’em a shout-out in the comments section!)

Artists are eligible to compete if they have released commercially available music of any style the previous calendar year. Winners are determined by online voting from a public audience around the world. Anyone with an internet connection may cast a vote.

Last year, more than 30,000 people cast ballots, the highest in the event’s history.

Winners of the 12th Annual Hawaii Music Awards will be announced in April.
